RAD001 is the research name/code for an investigational new medication made by Novartis. RAD001 has been approved since 2003 in many European countries under the trade name Certican®. At this time, RAD001 is only available to US cancer patients in clinical studies such as Record-2. RAD001 is also being studied as a treatment for patients with various cancers, either alone or in combination with other cancer treatments.
Experiments have shown that RAD001 can prevent cancer cells from multiplying. RAD001 may also block the formation of the special blood vessels that a tumor needs to grow and spread. Preliminary information available from clinical studies in kidney cancer has shown that RAD001 can slow the growth of this type of cancer in patients.
Novartis Oncology is investigating the drug RAD001 in patients with Kidney Cancer. You may be eligible to participate if you are 18 years of age or older, diagnosed with cancer in the kidney that has spread to other organs in your body, and have failed VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) receptor kinase inhibitor therapy such as Sutent and/or Nexavar. Participants will be monitored closely throughout their treatment by highly trained doctors and nurses who specialize in kidney cancer research and treatment.
